As We Grow: Agricultural STEM Program
As We Grow is a hands-on summer Agricultural STEM program that helps children ages 6-11 in marginalized communities strengthen critical thinking, reading, and math skills through real-world farming and business experiences. Participants grow their own food using traditional and hydroponic methods, explore how science and technology shape agriculture, and even set up farmers markets to sell their produce—connecting them to South Carolina’s largest financial industry while fostering self-sufficiency and STEM learning.
As We Grow is a summer, project-based Agricultural STEM program offered by Palmetto Learning Academy of SC, designed to enhance critical thinking, reading, and math skills in African American children ages 6-11 from marginalized communities.
Through hands-on learning, students explore how science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) influence the food they eat. They gain real-world experience by growing their own food using traditional and hydroponic methods and even setting up farmers markets to sell their produce—actively engaging in South Carolina’s largest financial industry.
By connecting education with agriculture, As We Grow empowers young learners with practical skills, business knowledge, and a deeper understanding of food systems, fostering confidence, curiosity, and self-sufficiency for a brighter future.
